How to send a first message worth answering
A good first message is short, specific and easy to answer.
In short
- Mention something from their profile.
- Ask one clear question.
- Keep it short and friendly.
- Be patient if there is no reply straight away.
Start with something from their profile
Referring to something in their profile shows that you read it. If they mention cruises or documentaries, say what you enjoy about them too. A message that could be sent to anyone is usually treated that way.
Ask one question
One clear question is easier to answer than three. Choose something that invites more than yes or no, such as what they like most about a hobby they mention.
Keep it short and kind
Two or three sentences is plenty. Say hello, say what caught your attention and ask your question. Leave out comments about appearance, long life stories and anything you would not say face to face.
Give it time
Not everyone replies, and that is no reflection on you. Free members can send a limited number of messages each day, so spend them on people whose profiles you have read, and move on kindly if a message goes unanswered. If a conversation becomes unwelcome, you can block or report the person at any time.
